Saving Money On Your Massachusetts Auto Policy
Benefits of Safe Driving
Massachusetts encourages safe driving by rewarding those drivers who do not cause accidents or incur traffic violations with significant discounts on their insurance premiums. Meanwhile higher risk drivers are surcharged and pay higher premiums. This program is called the Safe Driver Insurance Plan.
How the Safe Driver Insurance Plan works
Each licensed driver in the state of Massachusetts has points that indicate their driving history. That number is called their S.D.I.P. Step. When you are first licensed in Massachusetts you are assigned a neutral step number. The neutral step number is 15. With each incident free year you drop a point until you reach the very best step of 9. Alternatively your S.D.I.P. step increases based on the type of incident(s) you have during the year, the highest being a step 35.
How common moving violations and accidents affect your SDIP
Traffic violations and accidents have different point values, the more severe the accident or violation, the greater the point surcharge. If the first traffic law violation in six years is minor, a surcharge is not applied. Here is a list of the most common surcharge points:
- Major Traffic Law Violation: 5 Points
- Major At-Fault Accident:4 Points
- Minor At-Fault Accident:3 Points
- Minor Traffic Law Violation:2 Points
In each of the above cases you will also lose your incident-free year credit.
Additional Discounts
Although Massachusetts Automobile insurance rates are set and regulated by the state insurance department, there are some additional discounts available. Some group programs exist that allow members to save a percentage on their premiums. Although the discounts have been significantly reduced in recent years, the discounts available are worth looking into. Some of the most popular group discounts that we offer include the following:
- AAA (American Automobile Club)
- Boston College Alumni Association
- CPA (Certified Public Accountants)
- Framingham Municipal Federal Credit Union
